FuzeHub sponsors the annual FuzeHub Commercialization Competition.  Funding for the Jeff Lawrence Manufacturing Innovation Fund is provided by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) and administered by FuzeHub. During the competition, finalists from across New York State pitch their innovations and a panel of industry experts select the award recipients based on the commercialization potential of their technology.

The Commercialization Competition was launched in 2017 to support pre-revenue businesses at a specific stage in their product development. Award money must be used to produce or improve upon a working prototype, to enable the company to pursue additional investments and customers, leading to commercialization of their product. The competition is part of the Jeff Lawrence Innovation Fund which supports activities designed to promote technology development and commercialization across New York State. The fund provides $1 million annually and is administered by FuzeHub, the statewide Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center.

FuzeHub is a not-for-profit organization that connects New York’s small and mid-sized manufacturing companies to the resources, programs and expertise they need for technology commercialization, innovation and business growth.  FuzeHub helps companies navigate New York’s robust network of industry experts at Manufacturing Extension Partners centers, universities, economic development organizations and other providers. FuzeHub is the statewide New York Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) center, supported by Empire State Development’s Division of Science, Technology & Innovation (NYSTAR).

Josh Aviv won FuzeHub’s first-ever Jeff Lawrence Innovation FundCommercialization Competition in 2017, shortly after graduating from Syracuse University.  The award helped him create his working prototype which caught the attention of his first pre-seed investors in Boston, and set him on the path to commericalization. The company is now manufacturing its ultra-fast portable EV charger in Buffalo.

This post is for current and past participants in The Blackstone LaunchPad & Techstars program at Syracuse.  We’ve heard that you want to stay in touch and also connect with other LaunchPad startups across the global network of 20+ universities (and growing). The LanchPad network has created a new (private) LinkedIn group to connect current participants and alumni from LaunchPad network universities.  If you’re one of those students or alumni join the new LinkedIn group here.

As you know, #GiveFirst is a core value of our entrepreneurship program and culture, and we want to by provide even more opportunity for connection between today’s best and brightest student founders.  Maybe one of these talented young people is looking for a peer mentor with just your expertise.  Or maybe you’re looking for a few highly driven and entrepreneurial team members or entry-level employees with specific skill sets.  Or maybe you want an opportunity to reconnect with someone you got to know years ago at a LaunchPad network event. Either way, we hope you’ll consider joining this virtual community, and connect the dots across the ecosystem.

Given our new virtual reality, we think this group will also be even more important and valuable than ever to both current, and past, participants – and to find peer mentors, experts and add team members from across the entire global network.  That’s the power of the Blackstone LaunchPad & Techstars.

If you’re not yet a member and want to join this powerful global network, start right here on the Syracuse campus.  Join here, drop us an e-mail at LaunchPad@syr.edu or visit us in Bird Library.  We’re open for business by appointment.

Join us for a fall Fireside Chat series featuring Syracuse University alumni, student and parents who are successful entrepreneurs and innovation leaders. Zoom chats are each Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and all are welcome to join at http://bit.ly/launchpad-fall-fireside-chat. Here is the fall 2020 line-up:

Friday, October 23 at 3 p.m. – Kenneth Williams ’87, Product Marketing and Senior Manager, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Matt Shumer, Co-founder of Otherside AI.

Kenneth Williams holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and BA in Economics from Syracuse University, class of ’87.  He also holds a MS in Electrical Engineering from the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ.  He has been the Business Development & Product Marketing Manager for Qualcomm Inc.  since 2017 where is responsible for wireless technology product sales for North America focusing on cellular IoT, cellular Infrastructure, small cells, macro base stations and mobile computing platforms.  Before that, he was Product Marketing Manager at TDK Inc. for eight years and Product Marketing Manager for EPCOS Inc. for eight years.  He was previously a Systems Engineer for Bell Communications Research for eight years.  Williams is an “Orange Family.”  His wife is also an SU alum, and he is the parent of two Syracuse University students.

Picture of Matt Shumer

Matt Shumer is a Syracuse University student and co-founder of Otherside AI, which started in the LaunchPad.  Shumer started his first business at the age of twelve and soon realized his interest was not only creating new products and technologies, but also marketing and selling his ideas. He began working with the LaunchPad when he started as a Syracuse University student in the Whitman School of Management as a freshman in 2018.  He quickly became a Rubin Family Innovation Mentor at the LaunchPad and he launched Visos, a company that integrated virtual reality into healthcare.  As he was networking to build and launch his venture, communicating constantly with investors, mentors, industry experts and others in the field, Matt noticed that the task of writing dozens of emails a day was bogging down his productivity. To address this problem, he started working with artificial intelligence (AI) software that could use key words and phrases to construct full, well-written emails. What started as a tool to improve networking for one venture became a dynamic new venture of its own.

Matt realized the potential of an AI-powered email service and built a team to launch OthersideAI. The software is built on the principle of redefining the way we communicate digitally.

When OthersideAI demo launched on Twitter, it spread like wildfire, getting mentions in the New York Times, to Fortune, and the OthersideAI team recently closed on a major investment.

Together, Williams and Shumer will be talking about technology trends that are driving innovation, how to drive market value, and what it takes to be a successful tech innovator and entrepreneur in a global marketplace.
